Abstract
This essay reports an historical and sociological journey through family memories to the battlefield of World War I. It follows the short military career of a working class lad through the Territorial Army (Northumberland Fusiliers) to his death on the Ypres Salient in 1915. It builds on the bridges of memory, soldiers' diaries, and newspaper reports to link the past to the present and explore the logic of war from the point of view of the ordinary soldier. The method employed generates new questions about World War I and is an accessible one for non‐specialists to use to organise their own journeys to the past.

Abstract
This paper suggests in an exploratory way that an historical sociology of post‐war British society should include a concern with changes in sentiment and emotion or in what following Raymond Williams is termed 'structures of feeling'. The main theme discussed is what people from different social backgrounds feel about the changes which have taken place in their lives and in the society around them and in how the future is conceived. Three issues focus this ‐ change in aspects of national identity, in prevailing conceptions of citizenship and belonging, and in feelings towards the welfare state.

Der Beitrag basiert auf einer wissenschaftlichen Begleitung des Projektes "Investing in Children", ein Menschenrechts- und Bürgerschaftsprojekt, welches von 1995 bis 1998 in England durchgeführt wurde. Das Projekt ging davon aus, dass junge Menschen eigenständig als Bürger partizipieren können, wenn ihnen die Möglichkeit dazu gegeben wird. Am Beispiel zweier Fallstudien aus dem Projekt (Transport Group, School Dinners) wird verdeutlicht, dass Jugendliche ebenso verantwortungsbewusst als Bürger handeln wie Erwachsene und dass dieses aktive Engagement ein offener Lernprozess ist, der dann besonders erfolgreich verläuft, wenn Bürger Bestätigung und Anerkennung für ihr Engagement erfahren. Besonders für Großbritannien, wo die Diskussion um die politische Apathie von Jugendlichen zunimmt, kann die Schlussfolgerung gezogen werden, dass nur dort, wo Kindern und Jugendlichen die Möglichkeit zur Wahrnehmung ihrer politischen und sozialen Rechte gegeben wird, Motivation und Partizipation geweckt werden, sich für die eigenen Interessen als Bürger einzusetzen.
